Waupun Memorial Hospital has served the Waupun area for more than 50 years providing 24 hour care to the residents of Waupun. It has a state of the art Emergency Department and an intensive care unit as well as being a full service hospital.
The information directly below was take from the pamphlet published by the Waupun Chamber of Commerce for the July 1951 opening of the Waupun Memorial Hospital. Here is a link to the document.
- In 1943 Waupun Mayor, Juson J. Rikkers appointed a committee to investigate the possibility of building a hospital in Waupun.
- It was decided that the city could not do the project on it's own and the School Sisters of St. Francis were contacted to see if they would be interested in completing the project.
- The agreement was that the city would provide $300,000 towards the building and the Sisters would provide the balance which was thought at the time to come to about $900,000.
- Matt Rens and George J. Landaal donated the land for the building.
- Some of the surrounding communities also donated as did many of the local businesses.
- The hospital was named to be recognized as a Memorial to the War Dead.
- The hospital did not face Main Street but, instead faced South to Brown Street and the city park across the street on the South side
- The Center and North wings of the hospital were occupied by the Sisters and the technical staff that operate the hospital. There was a Chapel and 25 bedrooms which would furnish sleeping accommodations for 30 people. It is assumed that these were not patients.
- There were 53 "patient rooms".
- The Second Floor had 4 private rooms, 12 semi-private rooms, one 4 bed "ward" and a 4 bassinet nursery.
- The Third Floor, dedicated to surgical patients, had 4 private rooms, 10 semi-private rooms and 4 "wards" which would possibly mean 4 beds per ward or 16 beds.
- The Fourth Floor had 3 private rooms, 2 nurseries and accommodated 20 bassinets.
So, how many total PATIENT BEDS did the hospital have in 1951?
- 1st floor: 0.
- 2nd floor: 32
- 3rd floor: 40
- 4th floor: 3
Looks like they had 75 beds not counting the bassinets which totaled 24 or the bedrooms for the nuns.
In 2007 the hospital expanded the capacity for "patient care" with a 52,775 square foot addition of new "rooms" but not necessarily in-patient rooms.
- 42 Patient "Rooms"
- 3 High-Tech Operating Rooms
- Endoscopy Procedure Room
- 11 Pre/Postoperative Patient Rooms
- $1.5 Million in Pharmacy Renovations
- Family Waiting Area
- Dining Room
In 2017 the hospital expanded again with a $23 million addition.
Now, in 2022, it appears as though the move from the older hospital rooms to the new rooms is complete. The hospital formerly seems to have been able to care for 75 in-patients in 1951 when the population of the USA was 161 million people. This same hospital after all these additions and millions of dollars spent can now care for 25 in-patients with 335 million USA population.
